Configure an external reporting system connection

Connect your project to an external system so reports and data can be securely shared and kept in sync.

Audience

This guide is designed for project manager.

Steps

Step 1: Open the external system connection dialog

From the reports area, select the option to add or edit an external system to open the External System dialog. The dialog shows available connectors and any existing configuration details.

Open the external system connection dialog

Browse the gallery view and select the external system connector that matches the platform you want to integrate with. This selection loads the provider-specific configuration view.

Choose a connector from the gallery

Step 3: Review or adjust the system name and type

In the provider view, review the automatically suggested system ID and name. Update these fields if needed so your team can easily recognise this connection, and confirm the external system type if shown.

Review or adjust the system name and type

Step 4: Select the authentication method

Choose the appropriate authentication type, such as API key, bearer token, username and password, OAuth, or a custom method, based on how the external system expects to receive credentials.

Select the authentication method

Step 5: Enter authentication credentials

Fill in the required credential fields for the chosen authentication method, for example API key value, bearer token, username and password, or OAuth client details and token URL, ensuring they match the external system configuration.

Enter authentication credentials

Step 6: Configure advanced authentication (optional)

Switch to the advanced view if you need to provide a custom JSON payload for headers or non-standard authentication. Edit the sample JSON to match the external system requirements and validate the structure.

Step 7: Enable or disable the connection

Use the available switch to set whether the external system connection should be active immediately. Disabling the switch keeps the configuration saved but not used until you enable it later.

Enable or disable the connection

Step 8: Test the connection

Use the test or connect option to verify that the provided credentials and configuration work. Review any error message returned and adjust the settings if the curated test error indicates a problem.

Test the connection

Step 9: Save the external system configuration

Select the save or connect button to submit the configuration. On success, the external system is created or updated and becomes available for use in reporting workflows.
